Rebuilding Life in Chicago — one story at a time.
From exile to identity: my journey of growth, culture & healing.
From exile to identity: my journey of growth, culture & healing.
My name is Brayham — and my story is about rebuilding.
I was born to immigrant parents who gave up everything so their kids could have a chance. I grew up inside the Jehovah’s Witness religion, where every part of your life is controlled — your identity, your friends, your future. At 18, when I decided to leave, I was banished. Overnight, I lost my community, my support, and the only world I ever knew.
At 21, I packed a few bags and moved to Chicago. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t have a plan. But I had something I’d never had before: freedom.
Chicago raised me in ways my childhood never could. The city taught me survival, independence, and resilience. I learned to rebuild myself from the ground up — new values, new dreams, new identity. For the first time, I was choosing who I wanted to become.
For the past two years, I worked with a nonprofit in Little Village, giving back to a community that reminded me so much of home. I saw firsthand the strength of immigrant families, the beauty of culture, and the power of community — even when resources are limited. It shaped me. It humbled me. It grounded me.
Today, at 28, I’m still rebuilding — but from a stronger place. I’m healing old wounds, learning to trust myself, and discovering what it means to live a life that feels like mine. I share my journey of self-growth, community connection, and personal transformation. Through storytelling, social media, and community work, I hope to inspire others who are navigating their own rebuilding process.
